The British Columbia Black History Awareness Society, a non-profit society, was formed in February 1994 to continue the work started by THE BRITISH COLUMBIA BLACK HISTORY AWARENESS COMMITTEE, namely celebrating the achievements of Black people in British Columbia as part of Black History Month. The Society expanded its' objectives to include creating an awareness of the history of Black pioneers in British Columbia; stimulating interest in the study of the contributions of persons of African ancestry to British Columbia and Canada; and celebrating the historical achievements of Black people in arts, education, government, sports, science, etc. in British Columbia and Canada.

A leader in providing services for immigrants and in promoting diversity in our community, CVIMS is a registered charity and a non-profit, community-based agency that works with individuals and organizations. For over 30 years it has developed and delivered programs and services for immigrants, and worked with the community to promote diversity and welcome immigrants to the central island region.

Architect of The Port Theatre, Terry Williams' goal was to build a theatre that had good sight lines from all seats, excellent acoustics and a wonderful sense of intimacy. Audiences have raved about these features since it opened.

The Nanaimo Museum is the guardian of the Bastion, a former Hudson's Bay Company outpost that was built in 1853. The museum provides a site interpreter to share the fascinating stories of the lives of early settlers and the significance of the Bastion to Nanaimo.
