History of the NAHS

The society started as a steering committee in 1999 at Vancouver Island University.

The group discussed and celebrated the acheivements of Afro-Centric people in British Columbia.

In 2003, the society began as the Black History Society but there were arguments about how to promote it effectivly.

On March 19, 2005, a motion was passed to change the name to Nanaimo African Heritage Society.

The society became officially incorporated under the Society Act on August 9, 2005.

Our Mandate

 

Map of African continent.The mandate of our society is to utilize the fibre and culture of the Nanaimo African Heritage Society to best serve the community and to provide a cultural, plus a recreational club and venue for positive social interaction.


Our society also provides a sense of community for people with an interest in Black History Month.  Every February in celebration, our society provides a welcoming environment for people of all cultures to join us in honouring Afro-Centric pioneers world wide.

The objectives of the Nanaimo African Heritage Society are:

  • To promote African Heritage Culture in our society
  • To share the rich African Heritage with the diverse groups of the community
  • To promote the knowledge related to the nature of African Heritage
  • To utilize the fibre and culture of the African Heritage to best serve the community
  • To provide cultural and recreational venues for positive social interaction
